Halloween Fun!

Yesterday we celebrated Halloween at Academy School!  We walked in a parade across the street to Melrose Terrace to show off our fabulous costumes and to get a little treat from the residents who live there.  Upon returning to school we looked around at all of the fabulous pumpkins and then had a small party. It was such a great day!

Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest

We are so lucky at Academy School to have many wonderful events and Halloween is no exception. The pumpkin decorating contest this year was amazing and competition was very fierce. Unfortunately we did not win this year, but we had lots of fun with our theme of emojis and happiness!  We were able to carve three big pumpkins, decorate our own paper plate emojis and small emoji pumpkins.  It was lots of fun!

Police Officer Visits Kindergarten

Our month long study of community helpers began yesterday with a visit from Officer Lindsey from the Brattleboro Police Department.  The children were thrilled to learn all about what she does at work - there were lots of questions! Officer Lindsay also showed the Kindergarteners all of the tools she has on her belt and talked about how she uses each one of them. She stressed to them the importance of school and staying physically fit. We were so lucky to have her join us for part of the morning.  The Kindergarteners loved having her visit!

Mr. Paciulli Reads To Us

Every Thursday Mr. Paciulli, our principal, comes in to read to the Kindergarteners.  It is such a wonderful time where the children not only get to spend quality time with him, but they also get to hear a book read aloud as well. Today he read a great fall book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert.

Testing Out Our Shade Structures

Today we went outside and tested our shade structures. We used thermometers to check the temperature inside our structures and outside on the pavement. We found out their our monsters would stay cooler in the shade. It was a great learning experience!

Building Our Shade Structures

Yesterday we built our shade structures out of recycled materials.  Everyone worked so hard and were very creative.  Here are a few pictures of us hard at work!

Scooter Boards

One of the Kindergarteners favorite times of the week is going to "specials" - art, music, library and physical education.  In PE yesterday with Mr. Johnson, the class started by using scooter boards.  They had such fun learning how to use them different ways - sitting on the bottoms, using their feet and hands, laying on their bellies, etc.

Learning About The Sun/Shade

As part of our science curriculum this year, we will be using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to address specific topics.  This week we are taking a few days off from math to learn about weather and climate.   Today we talked about the sun (where it is, what it is made up of, etc.) and most importantly that the sun is VERY HOT!  The idea of using shade to help keep us cool came up during our discussion. One of the standards we are working on is K-PS3-2: Use tools and materials to design and build a structure that will reduce the warming effect of sunlight on an area.  The assignment is to build a shade structure so their monster can still play outdoors, but not be in direct sunlight.
