Green Mountain Orchard Trip

Yesterday was our field trip to Green Mountain Orchard in Putney.  We such a great time!!  There were so many things to do and see.   We made apple cider using an old fashioned press and our big Kindergarten muscles! We had a cider doughnut and apple cider for snack. We had fun picking lots and lots of apples! We took a hike around the orchard, visited the horses and had a picnic lunch.  Enjoy them, they are delicious!  Thank you so much to all the parents and siblings that went with us.  It was a terrific day!

Star of the Day

"Star of the Day"!!!   This person is treated like a star for the day.  We interview the star to find out how old they are, what they like to eat, their favorite color and to find out something that they like to play.  This person gets to wear a star necklace and be the line leader for the whole day.  The other part of being the star is that we focus on that student's name.  We look at how many letters are in their name, what letter is in the beginning, what is at the end and we try to name other objects that start with the same letter sound.  We also sing to the star (to the tune of "Twinkle, twinkle little star"): "Special, special, special star.  How we wonder who you are. ___________ are you here today? Stand up tall and then we'll say.....welcome, welcome special star we're so glad your who you are!"  The most fun is when we cheer that child's name as loud as we can! This is a great activity for the beginning of the year to get to know each student and for literacy awareness.  The kids are excited to see who will be the next STAR!

Learning About Our Names

We have been spending lots of time talking about our names!  We have been working on not only learning our friends' names, but also noticing different things about each of them...number of letters, syllables, rhymes, nicknames, etc. We have also been talking about how each person is special and therefore their name begins with an uppercase or capital letter.  Today we did an art project during our shine time to help us remember that our name begins with an uppercase letter. Each child decorated "their letter" so we could hang them up.

Seasons of Our Maple Tree

Over the course of the year, we are going to be talking about the seasons.  In our school garden we have a great maple tree that we are going to observe and draw as the seasons change.  We can actually see this tree from our classroom window. Today we did our summer observational drawing.

This is how our tree looks in the summer!

Art From The Heart

One of my favorite parts of being a Kindergarten teacher is all of the love that is given to me by my students.  Each day I am given so many hugs and also lots of wonderful pictures.  Here are just a few of the great works of art that I was given yesterday!

Literacy Centers and Fundations

We have started to pull more academics into our schedule.  We have been working with our names in literacy centers.  All of centers are fun and are both academic and social.  It has been a great way to learn about one another.  We have started learning about the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make through a curriculum called FUNdations.  This program introduces anywhere from one to three letters per week.  It teaches each letter in a distinct sequence and with a letter name - keyword - sound.  We also work on being able to write each letter properly. We have learned three letters so far Tt - top - "t", Bb - bat - "b" and Ff - fun - "f".  We are working on making sure that we clip the letter sounds short: "t" instead of "ta", this is VERY important!!

Kindergarteners Love Math!

Each morning we have math time.  We spent last week learning how to use the many different manipulatives that we will be using over the course of the year.  The children are enjoying using these materials!  There have been some wonderful creations made!

Celebrating Our New Friend's Birthday

One day recently we had the great opportunity of celebrating one of our friend's birthdays here at school. Her mom, Jen, shared her talent with us...she can sing and play the guitar! We had such a fun time singing some of our favorite songs and moving to music! We also had a special snack to celebrate!  Thank you so much for coming into our classroom!

Our First Story with Ms. O'Neill

Today Ms. O'Neill, our assistant principal, came in to read to us.  She comes in every Tuesday to read to the Kindergarteners.  Her first read aloud of the year was A Teacher For Bear by Anne Marie Pace.  The students loved this story!  A great choice for the beginning of the year!

Our First Story with Mr. Paciuilli

Every Thursday Mr. Paciulli, our principal, comes in to read to the Kindergarteners.  It is such a wonderful time where the children not only get to spend quality time with him, but they also get to hear a book read aloud as well. For his first story of the year, Mr. Paciulli read Chu's First Day of School by Neil Gaiman.

Playdough Fun

We have been spending time learning about how to use the materials in our classroom.  One day recently we played with playdough.  It was a BIG hit!
