Pep Rally!!

Today we went to an Academy School pep rally to celebrate all of the students in grades 3-6 who will be taking the NECAPs beginning this week.  We created signs, watched the Academy Cheerleaders perform, listened to Mr. Johnson (he also did some great soccer tricks) and Mr. Paciulli speak. We also did lots of cheering and Nurse Amy was the MC!!!  It was so much fun!

Green Mountain Orchard Field Trip

Today was our field trip to Green Mountain Orchard in Putney.  We had the BEST time!!  There were so many things to do and see.  We had a cider doughnut and apple cider for snack.  We made apple cider using an old fashioned press and our big Kindergarten muscles! We took a hike around the orchard, visited the horses, had a picnic lunch and picked lots of apples to. We had fun picking lots and lots of apples!  Enjoy them, they are delicious!  Thank you so much to all the parents and siblings that went with us.  It was a terrific day!

Celebrating Johnny Appleseed

On Thursday, we celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday!  We have been reading books about him and were quite excited to find out that it was his birthday. We made hats to wear and sampled different kinds of apples.  This class is particularly interested in doing different science experiments.  We checked to see if an apple and an apple seed would float or sink.  Very interesting results - ask your child the results of our experiments.

We Are Bucket Fillers

Ms. P and Elizabeth, our school counselors, came into class today and read us the book Have You Filled A Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud.  This book talks about ways the be a bucket filler (showing kindness towards others) or a bucket dipper (being unkind). The Kindergarteners brainstormed some ways that they could be bucket fillers...sharing, being nice, playing with a friend, asking if your friend is okay, standing up for a friend by saying that is not nice, etc.  The students made their own "buckets" using a paper bag and will be giving stars to their friends if they are being a bucket filler.

Nurse Amy Visits Us!

Nurse Amy came into class on Monday to teach us how to brush our teeth.  The students loved having her come in with her giant toothbrush and set of teeth.  We are so fortunate that every child got a toothbrush to take home.

Academy Nature Trail

Last Friday we took a hike on the Academy School Nature trail.  It is a beautiful trail that was put in by parents using grant money.  We spent our time outside observing nature and how things look in the woods during the summer.  We took some time to draw a picture of a striped maple tree.  This is something that we will do several times during the year to document how the tree changes over the course of the year.

We spotted a small toad in the woods.

We loved our time in the woods!

Our First Story With Ms.O'Neill

Today Ms. O'Neill, our assistant principal, came in to read to us.  She comes in every Tuesday to read to the Kindergarteners.  Her first read aloud of the year was A Teacher For Bear by Anne Marie Pace.  The students loved this story!  A great choice for the beginning of the year!

Literacy Centers and Fundations

We have started to pull more academics into our schedule.  We have been working with our names in literacy centers.  All of centers are fun and are both academic and social.  It has been a great way to learn about one another.  We have started learning about the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make through a curriculum called FUNdations.  This program introduces anywhere from one to three letters per week.  It teaches each letter in a distinct sequence and with a letter name - keyword - sound.  We also work on being able to write each letter properly. We have learned three letters so far Tt - top - "t", Bb - bat - "b" and Ff - fun - "f".  We are working on making sure that we clip the letter sounds short: "t" instead of "ta", this is VERY important!!
Showing off our hard work!
