This week Academy School was honored to welcome the Vermont Commissioner of Education, Armando Vilaseca. As part of his visit, Mr. Vilaseca met with students, teachers and parents to talk about the wonderful progress the school has made over the past several years. As part of his visit, Commissioner Vilaseca came to our classroom with Mr. Stahley, WSESU superintendent, Mr. Paciulli and Ms. O'Neill to watch part of a FUNdations lesson on the SMARTboard and to talk with the us. Our class wrote a book for him titled "Academy School is Special" in which each child dictated the words to me and then illustrated that page. He read the book to them and spoke to each child about their page. The Commissioner told us that he was going to bring this book back to Montpelier to put in his office so that everyone that visits him will be able to read about how special Academy School is. (Thank you to Wendy Lynde for sharing her photos!)

Each Tuesday morning, we are happy to have Mr. B come in and read to our class. After years as a classroom teacher, Mr. B has retired from Academy School, but still makes time to spend here. He brings in wonderful stories to read and this week he brought in his ukulele to play a tune for us. We look forward to his visits each week!

With the beautiful view of autumn trees just outside our window, we created our own fall trees using paint, brushes and Q-tips. The Kindergarteners loved this project and their works of art are being proudly displayed on the bulletin board outside our classroom.

At Academy School, we use the FUNdations program to teach the letters of the alphabet, the sounds they make and a keyword for each one. Currently, we are working on Bb, Ff, Ii, Mm, Nn, Tt, Uu. We usually use white boards to practice writing each of the letters, but one beautiful day we went outside and used chalk to practice our new skills. The Kindergarteners loved it!

On a beautiful, fall day last week we went to Green Mountain Orchard in Putney to go apple picking. The weather could not have been more perfect! We walked out into the orchard to pick apples and to eat a few, also. We worked hard to make apple cider using an apple press and then we got a chance to sample it along with a delicious cider doughnut. We took a wagon ride around the orchard. After our picnic lunch, we were able to read a few books about apples and take a hike around the orchard. It was so much fun!
