Pizza Party Field Trip!

After months of teamwork, determination and thousands of laps walked around the school, the Kindergarteners were so excited to go on a field trip to West Brattleboro Pizza with Nurse Amy and Mr. Johnson for lunch.  Everyone had such a fabulous time enjoying their lunch with their friends and some of their favorite adults. Many children told me that "this was the BEST day of Kindergarten ever!"

Mardi Gras Day!

We celebrated our Winter Walking victory with a day full of fun!  We walked 5, 280 laps around the school or 1,320 miles....that is the distance it would take to walk from Brattleboro, Vermont to New Orleans, Louisiana. That is a major accomplishment for anyone, but for a group of Kindergartners it is simply AMAZING!  We spent the whole day learning about New Orleans and having a Mardi Gras party.  We used our SMARTboard and took a virtual trip to New Orleans using Google Earth and watched an actual Mardi Gras parade on YouTube. We play a musical Mardi Gras mask game and then decorated our own masks.  In the afternoon, we had Adelee Austin as our Secret Reader!  Afterwards we wore our masks and had a Mardi Gras parade and made a wish using our special coins!  Our day ended with an ice cream party with our parents. It was such a great day!

Happy Mardi Gras Day!

Wednesday's Secret Reader

Today we were lucky enough to have Tabby Favreau be our secret reader. She was able to fool the Kindergarteners by being inside the classroom when the clues were read aloud (instead of waiting outside in the hallway). They had no idea she was the secret reader.  She read us a family favorite titled I'm A Manatee by John Lithgow. It was a very funny book about a lovable manatee.  Thank you so much Tabby for reading to us!

A visit from the Brattleboro Food Co-op

Yesterday Meredith Wade came to visit from the Brattleboro Food Co-op for the first of four visits to work with the Kindergartners around healthy eating.  Today the focus was on "eating a rainbow". Instead of looking at healthy food as part of one of the food groups, you can look at them based on their color.  She stressed the importance of eating healthy food of all colors.  They did a sorting activity with pretend food and had a delicious snack.

Top Lap Walker

Congratulations goes to everyone in our class for a great Winter Walking whole school win!  This person walked the most laps in our class and was awarded a special metal for his efforts!  Congratulations to him!

The Winter Walking Winner is.......

.....OUR KINDERGARTEN CLASS!  Nurse Amy and Mr. Johnson came to our classroom today to tell us that we not only walked the most laps of all the Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes, but that we walked more laps than any class in the WHOLE school! We walked 5, 280 laps around the school/playground! That is  1,320 miles! Needless to say, the kids are beyond excited!  We were also presented with the "Golden Boot" award that will stay in the classroom until the end of winter walking next year. We are so excited and are looking forward to a day of celebration including the thing that we have been working so hard for....a walking field trip for a pizza party with Mr. Johnson!!

The proud winners with Nurse Amy and Mr. Johnson!

Climbing to New Heights

Academy School is lucky enough to have both a fantastic physical education teacher and an amazing rock wall.  This week my Kindergarteners were given the opportunity, if they wanted to, to wear a special harness and climb up the wall as high as they wanted!  Their classmates cheered for them and this seemed to give them more confidence as they got higher up on the wall. This was such a thrill for them!

Friday's Secret Reader

On Friday, we had a fantastic former teacher from Academy School come read to our class - Maggie Bills. She is the grandmother of one of my Kindergartners.  She read the book Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London.  It is such a funny book and one that she likes to read with her grandson.
We had a great time having her read to us!

Thursday's Secret Reader

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to have Tim Johnson come and read to our class.  His granddaughter was so happy to have him visit us.  He read the book John and Tom by Willem Lange. He also talked to us about the importance of learning to read and how when he was young a neighbor would bring him to the public library in Vernon. He brought each child a bookmark as well.  It was a thrill to have him read to us!
