A visit from Farmer Amanda

Today we had the wonderful opportunity of having Amanda Ellis-Thurber from Lilac Ridge Farm come in to work with the class.  She taught us all (myself included) about the Cucurbita family and brought us lots of examples.  You might be asking yourself "What is in the Cucurbita family?"  Watermelon, cucumbers, pumpkins, squashes and gourds.  Amanda cut many of these items open and we found that they all had similar seeds - that means that they are all fruit!  We had a chance to sample the delicious watermelon and cucumbers.  She left us with lots of gourds to explore in our classroom science area.  It was such a terrific learning experience!
